Window Depot USA, a renowned supplier of energy-efficient windows and doors based in Dallas, Texas, is delighted to inform homeowners about the enticing tax credit prospects offered for eligible energy-efficient home enhancements.
Starting January 1, 2023, eligible homeowners can claim a tax credit of up to $3,200 for qualified improvements made through 2032.
The tax credit, outlined in previous versions of Form 5695 for improvements installed in 2022 or earlier, has been updated to offer homeowners significant savings on energy-efficient upgrades. The credit equals 30% of certain qualified expenses, including:
To qualify for the tax credit, homeowners must ensure that their home improvements meet energy efficiency standards and are new systems and materials. Building envelope components, such as exterior doors and windows, must meet applicable Energy Star requirements and have specific credit limits. For instance, the credit for exterior doors is limited to $250 per door and $500 in total, while exterior windows and skylights are limited to $600.
Home energy audits, which provide valuable insights into energy-saving opportunities, can qualify for a credit of up to $150. Furthermore, residential energy property that meets the highest efficiency tier defined by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) can qualify for a credit of up to $600 per item. This includes central air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, and boilers.
It's important to note that the tax credit has no lifetime dollar limit, allowing homeowners to claim the maximum annual credit every year until 2033. However, the credit is nonrefundable and cannot exceed the amount owed in taxes for the year. Excess credit cannot be applied to future tax years. To claim the energy-efficient home improvement credit, homeowners should file Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits Part II, along with their tax return. The credit must be claimed for the tax year when the improvement is installed rather than purchased.
